THE NATIONAL JUNIOR HONOR SOCIETY

Most Holy Redeemer Inter-Parochial School is a member of the National Junior Honor Society.

In their own words in various publications and Internet sites, "The National Honor Society (NHS) and the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) are the nation's premier organizations recognizing outstanding middle level and high school students who demonstrate excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. NHS and NJHS are proudly sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). The NASSP-the preeminent organization and national voice for middle level and high school leaders-also sponsors the National Association of Student Councils (NASC), which promotes and provides leadership development opportunities to prepare and empower students to serve their schools and communities."

NJHS Officers

2010 - 2011

This year's officers will be announced after fall elections are complete.

Membership in the Most Holy Redeemer Inter-Parochial School chapter of the National Junior Honor Society is earned by the effective demonstration of the five qualities held in high esteem by the society:  service, leadership, citizenship, character, and scholarship.

1. Service is a willingness to work for the benefit of those in need. It is the volunteering of time to help create a better tomorrow.

2. Leadership is the wholesome influence one has on our school community. A true leader strives to aid and train others, takes initiative in class and school activities, has self-confidence and will go forward.

3. Citizenship is the obligation to live up to democratic ideals of our country. Good citizens are bound to live up to the laws and guidelines of our society.

4. Character distinguishes one person from another. It gives individuality. Character is achieved, not received.

5. Scholarship is a commitment to learning. We should continue to learn even when formal education has ended, for education ends only with the end of life. Education can be obtained through diligence and effort.

National Junior Honor Society criteria at MHR:

  • First or Second Honors with all grades being 91 or above.

  • Satisfactory in all subject areas, homework, effort, and conduct.

  • The student exhibits scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and character.

  • Only the subject area and support teachers of the 7th and 8th grade students may nominate a student for induction on the NJHS nomination form. After a student is nominated, a teacher recommendation form will circulate for the teachers to rate each student in the five criteria. The student must obtain a minimum average of 17 points after the recommendation form has been totaled.

  • Once inducted into the National Junior Honor Society the student must maintain the eligibility criteria. Any grade below a 91 or a "Satisfactory", including Conduct, Effort, and Homework, will render the student on a probation status for one quarter. If the grade(s) is/are still below the 91 or "Satisfactory" after the following quarter, the student will be removed from the NJHS and will be ineligible for re-nomination for the following two quarters.

  • If a student fails to fulfill any part of the NJHS agreement, including, but not limited to, service requirements and maintaining evidence of scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and character, the student’s membership in the NJHS will be terminated.

  • Induction into the National Junior Honor Society will take place once each school year, spring semester, for 7th and 8th grade students. If needed, 8th grade students may be inducted in the fall semester.

  • The final decision for acceptance into the National Junior Honor Society is at the SOLE discretion of the principal and the sponsor.
