How AR Lists are Sorted . . .

  • Our Accelerated Reader book lists are so large they must be sorted by computer.  Therefore, the exact position of a book in the list is determined by how its title or author's name are entered in the vendor's data base.

  • As a rule, spaces and punctuation list first, then numerals, upper case letters, and lower case letters.

  • For authors, this means "De Young" (with the space) would precede all other "De..." names without a space.  "O'Connor" would precede "OConnor."  "DeBrunhoff" is in the D's, but "deBrunhoff" is always at the very end of the Author list.

  • Also, a few authors' names are so long they are truncated to fit on the page of the document formats--much like many of the long titles. So if you can't find the author in the document version, try the Internet version.

  • For titles, articles like "The" or "A" may appear at the beginning of the title, or after a comma at the end of the title. Either way, the computer ignores the article as it sorts. So look for such books by the second word in their title.  Also, a few book titles actually start with a numeral, so look for them at the very beginning of the list.

  • Remember, your browser and word processor have a built-in "Find" function, usually under "Edit" or with "Ctrl-F."  Try using it with a key word from the title or a part of the author's name...it's an easy and quick way to find the book you're looking for.
